“The "goodbye, caroline” voice line implies that she was actually a ditzy secretary"
SHE WAS JUST MAKING A SILLY JOKE!!
oops you pressed my fixation button
this line reads pretty clearly as a george burns and gracie allen reference. at the end of their show, he’d tell her to “say goodnight, gracie” and she’d say “goodnight, gracie!”
(it’s apocryphal, they never actually did it, but enough people remembered it that way that it became a thing)
gracie allen made her career on the “dumb dora” stereotype, playing off george as her straight man. out of character, though, she was brilliant, and george gave her the credit for their success. he spent his whole life (including the 30yrs after her death) saying things like:
“First of all you’ve got to have talent. And then you’ve got to marry her like I did.”
this was a very smart woman who played dumb professionally. this was a man who adored his wife, and respected the hell out of her as a working partner. this is the analogy that’s being drawn here.
what I’m saying is that this two-word line is so, so important.
and anyone who thinks caroline is stupid should be pushed out a window
TIL @mabelsyrupit is basically Caroline from Portal 2
