you put your hand down, almost touching the floor and THEN you walk up to them
because if they see you’re trying to touch them from up they’ll get scared
primal instinct, birds and stuff
and once you slowly walk up to them
you stay still
they’ll sniff you, they’re naturally curious
then,, they’ll rub their head on your hand
that’s where you pet the side of their head
and then you move to actually petting the cat
